The Bridge, Not the Leap

June 202614 minCompanion

The leap is a story we tell afterward. In practice, almost nobody who successfully changes their life does it in a single motion, and the ones who try usually end up back where they started with less money and a worse story.

What actually works looks like construction. You identify the specific load the old life is carrying, income, structure, identity, community, and you build a replacement for each one before you remove the original. The order matters, and it is rarely the order that feels most urgent.

Most people want to resolve identity first, because that is where the pain is loudest. But identity is the hardest to build in isolation and the most dependent on the others. Structure is usually the right place to start, because it is the cheapest to change and it makes everything downstream possible.

This is unglamorous work. It looks like nothing for a long time, and then it looks inevitable. The people around you will only see the second part, which is why the leap story persists even though almost no one actually leapt.
