I have told the short version of this many times and it has always bothered me, because the short version makes it sound like a decision rather than an erosion. This is the long version, with the hesitation left in.
The part I want to be honest about is how defensible staying was, and how long I used that defensibility as a reason not to look directly at the question. The reasons were real. They were also doing a job that had nothing to do with their being true.
There is no instruction at the end of this one. It is an account, not a method.
